![]() (b) The cheap spanner wrench to open the cylinder to add the oil is substandard and may slip out when using it I zipped it out using an impact wrench. Just enough oil to fill to the top of the piston frame NOT THE ENTIRE CYLINDER or you'll have a mess on your hands. You do not need to dump the hole bottle into the piston assembly. You can get a bottle of it from Greed-Mart in the air compressor section. The tool must be primed with air tool oil. Why did I ever waste my time with manual hand riveter's? Has spare parts to rebuild it.Ĭons: Though minor, there are some you should be aware of: I should have bought one of these YEARS ago. ![]() ![]() Pros: Cost effective, works as it should. I knocked a dozen rivets in less than a minute! It works like a champ with my cheap 20 gallon air compressor. I then decided to purchase the Harbor Freight Air Hydraulic rivet gun. After several uses, the gripper failed and wouldn't latch onto the rivet. It looked like it was made of cheap pot steel! The cheap Harbor Freight rivet gun was made of stamped steel and handles were real strong but the gripper mechanicsm wouldn't release rivets which slowed things down too much having to manually remove them. I would not recommend the expensive Sears hand or the cheap ($10) Harbor Freight manual rivet gun. This weekend, I was doing some minor rivet work and I broke 2 manual/hand squeeze rivet guns during the process. Now I'll say "alright!, it's a rivet!".Best $38.99 (not including 20% off coupon found in popular mechanics/science and reader's digest magazines) I have spent. and seen a fastener and said "dang, it's riveted". I've often times been working on the sled, car, bike etc. I've always thought buying the right tools as a good investment so it might cost me a new pair of shoes for Mrs. I'm going to buy the 1/4" pneumatic gun and then I'll be looking all over the house for things to rivet. I would buy a cheap manual rivet gun but then I wouldn't be able to use stainless steel rivets. I think I'll also need to buy some fittings to adapt my air hose to the riveter. Can I stop the compressor at say 100PSI, hook up the riveter and it will have enough psi to shoot a rivet one time?. My cheap Husky air compressor is 150psi and I can't set the pressure lower. Thanks for all the advice everyone and the offers to help, places to stay etc.I'm not trailering the sled anywhere to rivet the snow flap though. The others are without any obstructions so no worries on them. I have done numerous and this has worked best for me. It makes it much easier than trying to hold the washers with a tool. On that support piece that's against the frame super glue the back up washers on it and shoot the rivets. Leave the stick in there until you shoot the new rivets. Get a paint stirring stick to slip between the heat exchanger and the protruding rivet when you drill the ones left out. You will sacrifice the areas you can use it in due to its size.Īs you mentioned, need 3/16" X 1/2" stainless length rivets with the larger head or button on it. If no compressor find a hand gun, the longer the handles the more leverage, easier to set the rivets. ![]() As with any pneumatic tool a couple drops of oil in the air fitting before use is a good practice. I have had mine for years and it's shot thousands of rivets without issue. Tic, if you have a compressor go to Harbor Freight and pick up the rivet gun that shoots up to 1/4" rivets.
